SJIAA NEWSLETTER Summer 2018

St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf Alumni Association Summer 2018 Newsletter
REUNION 2020 CHAIRPERSON NEEDED!!! Greeting from President Patty (Simpson) Ruth – Thank you for your time in submitting your votes regarding Reunion 2020. Please accept my apology for not informing the news about the vote results sooner. While the Board reviewed the votes, we were happy to announce the vote results were in. Total number of votes submitted were 124. However, it would have been 125, we removed one vote because the person used a fake name with a fake email address as “John Doe with JohnDoe@johndoe.com”. We cannot accept it as the vote. The percent of vote for Yes was 77% and No was 23%. The Reunion 2020 will proceed. So... We need a Reunion Chairperson – we seek a person with a strong commitment, determination, good motivation, manage stress, an excellent leadership, and an event planning experience. We have about two years before Reunion 2020 comes and time is running out! If you are interested, please contact President Patty Ruth at SJIAAPresident@gmail.com as soon as possible.
We currently have several events planned in the next few months... but we currently have no one to volunteer in helping us, the Board, to plan events. We can’t do all the work alone. We need volunteers to help us out. We have one confirmed event... SJIAA Christmas Party on December 1, 2018. SO SAVE THE DATE! Details will be available after September 1st.

Time capsule found in the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Counsel at The Clemens Mansion opened
An Ephpheta Society pamphlet was among items discovered inside a time capsule in the Chapel of Our Lady of Good Counsel at the Clemens Mansion which was opened during a press conference on Wednesday, March 28, 2018. The Ephpheta Society works with the deaf and hard of hearing. The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded on the mission to teach the deaf. Photo by Laurie Skrivan, lskrivan@post- dispatch.com.
Hello everyone!
Yes, you read that right above stating “Time Capsule found...” Apparently, there was a fire, July 2017, destroyed an historic home that was housed by Mark Twain’s second cousin, James Clemens. Mark Twin was the author of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and other books.
Interesting article as the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet used to live there! The order used the north St. Louis property since 1885, adding the annex and chapel to the house originally build in 1850s.
Story says that one of the Sisters had fond memories of that house back in 1940s and called it “Cass Avenue”. The order moved out of house in 1949 to a residence – a permanent building build by the Mullanphy family, who was famously generous to religions orders and other Catholic institutions and initiatives to St. Louis in Carondelet. The St. Louis bishop asked the order to come to St. Louis in 1836 from France, in order to teach the city’s deaf residents. Some sisters lived-in log cabin until the Mullanphys paid for a new residence in 1840. The structure still stands on the order’s campus on Minnesota Avenue.
Attached is the link to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch article which was published. Interesting article and pictures of what was in the Time Capsule. One item stood out was the By-Laws of the Ephpheta Society dated September 1894!! Wow... amazing!  SJIAA News – September 2017

Alums Donated for Deaf Harvey Relief

Picture
Hurricane Harvey hit Houston area over the weekend of August 25, 2017. Many deaf people lost their homes and ended up staying at various shelters. I contacted Darla Connor, G’79, President of the Houston Association of the Deaf (HAD) for her advice what SJIAA can do to help with the hurricane survivors. Some alums have donated clothes, food, and checks for Deaf Harvey Relief. Frank Rhodes, G’83, Michelle Rhodes, G’90, Erika Ruth, G’97, Trish Nolan, G’84, and I helped loading all the donations into Frank’s SUV. The check we raised from the alums was $435.00 and it was donated to the Houston Association of the Deaf. Frank volunteered to drive the full load of donations to Houston. Many thanks to the alums for their donations.

Please continue praying for the survivors for their strength during their difficult times.

SJIAA Donated $100 for Golf Hole Sponsor

The SJIAA officers agreed to donate $100 to the 2017 MDGA/MDLGA Golf Tournament as the Golf hole sponsor because we wanted SJIAA to be recognized, also few SJI alums played at the tournament. The tournament was played at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Course in St. Charles, MO from July 31 – August 3, 2017. MDGA/MDLGA stands for Midwest Deaf Golf Association / Midwest Deaf Ladies Golf Association. 122 golfers from all over the USA came to St. Charles to play the three days tournament. 100 men and 22 women. Greg Petersen (non-SJI alumni) and Joey Keiling, L’45. were co-chairmen for the MDGA. Patty Simpson, G’80, and Trish Nolan, G’84, were co-chairladies for the MDLGA. Many SJI alums volunteered during the golf tournament week. We had a great time Many thanks to them.
